In order that Hong Kong University may be an author-
itative centre of information on the Biological Sciences,
it must acquire knowledge of local natural phenomena, much
of which is at present non existent or unco-ordinated.
therefore set about building up an organisation of interested
persons, many of whom are whole time paid workers, whom I
have trained as collectors, and who collect large quantities
of fauna and flora. This material is sent away to scientific
specialists in Universities and institutions throughout the
world for classification and study. These authorities not
only return named specimens but also write up the data in the
form of articles, the best and most satisfactory of which are
published in the "Hong Kong Naturalist", a publication which
I founded 3 years ago and which I edit. In this way articles
by first class scientists on the fauna and flora of Hong Kong
are made available to scientific students in the Far East.
300 Copies of the Naturalist are sold and many more are
presented to other Universities in exchange for their
publications.
The papers received in these exchanges are
bound and already form a considerable and increasing library
